US officials have confirmed that two aid workers held hostages by al-Shabaab since October 25th were free overnight.
An elite US Navy Seal mission was dropped into Somalia to carry out the secrete and effective rescue. There was a firefight resulting in the killing of at least nine of the the terrorists. But, the hostages were unharmed.
United States Vice-President Joe Biden told reporters that President Obama gave approval for the mission because of the poor and failing health of the youngest, American hostage, 32 year-old Jessica Buchanan. The other free hostage was 60 year-old Dane Poul Thisted from Denmark.
This is the most risky and intrusive face to face involvement by U.S. troops in Somalia since they pulled out of the country in 1994. U.S. drones have been employed recently in surveillance and attacks on al-Shabaab bases.
