Sudan’s President Bashir is reported to have made the offer to southern leader Salva Kiir at African Union talks in Ethiopia. The offer includes the northern troops pulling out of the the town of Abyei – a hotspot as South Sudan readies for independence in July.
More than a hundred thousand people have fled fighting in Abyei and the neighbouring region of South Kordofan.
Aid workers and reporters are saying that pro-southern groups are being ethnically cleansed.
