Terrorism Africa News
Nigeria has been trying to put on a stern, determined face, but the fact of the matter is the country is seemingly at the mercy of the al-Qaeda connected Boko Haram. Time and time again the home grown terrorist group has been able to strike without whenever and wherever they desire. The government has not instilled any fear in the terrorists, in fact the frequency and brazenness of their attacks has been increasing. The latest attack was the boldest yet, on two counts. The August 26th attack occurred in the captial Abuja. Security is higher there than anywhere in republic, yet they struck in daylight with national security personnel in attendance. Abuja is far away from Boko Haram’s base of operations and it is not the first time they have struck in Abuja, the last time it was the central police station. This recent attack was on the United Nations Nigerian base killing twenty-three. Why the United Nations if not to embarrass the government of Goodluck Jonathan.President Goodluck seems to be without luck or security intelligence to bring a halt to the bloody, Boko Haram attacks. Despite having his back against the wall, the President said the security forces would spare no resources to put down the terrorists. One could only wish him goodluck, pun intended.Nigeria has had more terrorist attacks in the past two years than any other country in the world, except Somalia, yet it has not caught the international press attention. Even the most recent attack grabbed only minimal space on new websites. Have we come to a point that terrorism only matters when it occurs to or on the turf of the world powers? It would seem so.
